The Overlooked History of Amphetamine Psychosis: A 70-Year-Old Warning

The Overlooked History of Amphetamine Psychosis: A 70-Year-Old Warning

A new study has raised alarms about the risk of psychosis linked to amphetamine-based medications like Adderall. But the most startling finding is not the danger itself, but how long we have known about it.

Researchers reviewing decades of medical literature discovered that the connection between amphetamines and psychotic symptoms was first documented in the 1950s. Back then, doctors observed patients developing paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions after using the drugs. The condition was even given a name: amphetamine psychosis. It was considered so reliable that psychiatrists sometimes used amphetamine intoxication to model schizophrenia in research.

The current study, published in a major medical journal, analyzed data from thousands of patients. It found that people taking prescription amphetamines face a significantly higher risk of developing psychosis compared to those not using the drugs. The risk increases with dosage, and it can appear even in people with no prior history of mental illness.

What makes this history so troubling is that the warning signs have been there all along. During the 1960s and 1970s, reports of amphetamine-induced psychosis were common in medical literature. The rise of methamphetamine abuse in later decades only reinforced the link. Yet, as prescriptions for drugs like Adderall exploded in the 1990s and 2000s, these old warnings seemed to fade from memory.

Doctors today often prescribe these medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder without fully discussing the psychiatric risks. Patients may not realize that what feels like a sudden mental breakdown could be triggered by their daily pill. The study's authors argue that both physicians and patients need to be aware of this long-known side effect, especially as amphetamine use continues to climb.

The history is not forgotten, but it has been ignored. And that ignorance, the researchers say, is putting people in danger.
