Psychologist Reveals the Real Reason So Many Adult Children Cut Off Their Parents

New data shows that more than a third of Americans have experienced estrangement from an immediate family member, and the most common fracture is between adult children and their parents. While many assume this happens after one explosive fight, psychologists say the real reason is far quieter and more cumulative.

Dr. Ellen Marks, a clinical psychologist specializing in family trauma, explains that most cutoffs are not about a single event but about a long history of unmet emotional needs. "The child doesn't wake up one day and decide to leave. They leave after years of feeling that their core self is not seen, heard, or validated," she says. In many cases, the parent dismisses the child's feelings, labels them as too sensitive, or demands loyalty over honesty. Over time, the adult child realizes that maintaining the relationship costs them their own mental health.

Marks points to a generational shift as well. Older parents often view respect as obedience, while younger adults see respect as mutual acknowledgment. When a parent refuses to apologize or even discuss past hurts, the child sees no path forward. The estrangement is not a punishment, she notes, but a protective measure. It is a way to stop the bleeding, even if it leaves a permanent scar. The trend is not about ungrateful kids, she insists, but about the painful recognition that some parents cannot change.
