SDSU sports psychology club launches to spotlight athletes’ mental health

While the physical demands of sports are widely recognized—the long hours, strenuous training, and relentless pursuit of peak condition—the mental burden carried by athletes often remains in the shadows. Acknowledging this critical gap, a new Sports Psychology Club has launched at San Diego State University, aiming to spotlight and support the psychological well-being of student-athletes.

The club emerges in response to a pressing need for accessible mental health resources tailored to the unique pressures of athletic competition. These include performance anxiety, identity struggles outside of sport, the stress of balancing academics with training, and the emotional toll of injuries. By creating a dedicated community, the organization provides a vital space for peer support, open discussion, and education.

Through planned workshops, guest speakers, and collaborative events, the club seeks to normalize conversations about mental health in athletic circles. Its mission is to equip student-athletes with practical tools for resilience, stress management, and maintaining mental fitness alongside their physical training. This initiative represents a significant step toward a more holistic view of athlete development, ensuring that mental strength is given the same priority as physical prowess in the pursuit of sporting excellence.
